Connie and Charles
by John H. Christian

She was a bright and gentle flame in the hand of our Lord

Connie Hearn lived in a very large five-story nursing home during the 1970s. She knew that cancer would soon set her free from this place of wrath and tears and release her to be forever with our Lord in heaven.

for more than a year, Connie hardly ever missed meeting with about fifty of the nursing home residents in their Friday evening "Living Word Crusade Fellowship" there.

Connie lived in the room nextdoor to Charles Faye. For months she had been telling Charles about Jesus and the way to true and everlasting life. But Charles steadfastly resisted as day by day she persistently told him things about the kingdom of God and explained the divine nature and glory of Jesus' marvelous salvation for us all. Bit by bit, with her heart and her Bible open to him, she lovingly softened his heart and calmed his resistance. Charles was earnest when he finally agreed to go with her to the Friday evening "Fellowship" meetings.

At Charles' first meeting, one of the women said that Charles had to leave, because the sign said, "NO SMOKING". Charles was very embarrased and hastily rose to leave. But the pastor took a chair across the room and asked Charles to sit there, where the draft would carry the smoke out of the room. When the pastor asked them, the entire group whole-heartedly agreed that it was better for Charles to stay and smoke there than to be smoking alone in his room where he would miss receiving the love and life-giving power in the Spirit of God's word. This was something that the group understood very well.

The weeks and months seemed to be rushing by as Charles attended nearly every Friday evening "Fellowship" meeting. Against the pastor's wishes and counsel, Charles insisted on donating a dollar bill at each meeting. Knowing that denying Charles that strong desire could be harmful, he would let him place it beween the pages of the pastor's Bible and would then pray for a special blessing for Charles. In between the meetings, Connie continued steadfastly teaching Charles from her Bible.

For some reason, which the pastor never knew, Charles left the nursing home. Several months had passed when Connie told the pastor that Charles Faye had died. She said, "I saw him just before he died, and he asked me to tell Reverend Christian that he knows now that he is saved".

If thou canst believe; all things are possible to him that believeth. I can believe. Can you? A few weeks later Connie died, too. The entire fellowship group missed her greatly. But we were also glad, knowing that she and Charles were with our Lord Jesus in His rest. Wouldn't it be nice to find the names of Connie Hearn and Charles Faye written side by side in the Lamb's Book Of Life?
