A Seed Sown

by John H. Christian

I had seen him the day before as they excavated and set the forms for a concrete driveway. This day they came back to pour the concrete. Once the concrete was poured and spread, the others left him and another man there to finish the job. On knee-boards, they hand-trowled the more than 700 square feet of concrete to a smooth finish.

The man was now alone and waited about an hour for the concrete to set. I watched him as he then worked with a wide long-handled broom to put the final finish on the surface. During the two days I had heard him talking with the others and could see that he was a decent young man. Now we were talking together while he broomed the surface. When it became dark I turned on the porch light, and he asked me to shine a light on the shadowy areas. By the time he finished, the temperature had dropped to four degrees above freezing.

He had had a long day and was tired. We talked on as he was gathering and cleaning his tools, and our conversation turned to the subject of salvation. He said that his parents had always attended church, but that it had been a while since he had. He said that he tries to do right to others and hoped that that would get him into heaven. I told him that that wasn't enough in itself, because it just doesn't work that way.

Then I said I apologize because I knew he was tired and needed to go home. But he said, "No. No, go on. I want to hear what you are telling me". I tried to keep it brief without quoting scriptures. Instead, I simply told him that in order to inherit eternal life with God in heaven, he had to become united with Jesus Christ. We discussed this and the necessity of diligently getting into the Word of God, getting the Word of God into his heart, and deeply desiring to surrender his life to Jesus Christ. At that point I did tell him about the 1Peter 1:23-25 Bible passage and offered to give him a New Testament Bible. But he said he had one already.

His boss showed up, and they gathered up their things and put them in the truck. I gave him my name and phone number before they left and invited him to call me if he ever wanted to talk with me more about his salvation.

I left the rest up to the Holy Spirit. It was in His hands all along, anyway -- and still is. I never saw or heard from that young man again, but I know that there are yet more seed sowers along the road of that young man's life. Jesus and the Holy Spirit will use them also in leading that young man home to our Father before his life here is finished.
