There are four important actions for which to make advance preparation
in order to enhance success when helping God's lost ones reach out and
receive the everlasting life salvation that Jesus Christ has given us ---
1. Be prepared to tell them of your own born again experience and the
changes it has made in your life, and the assurance you have of
everlasting life in heaven.
2. Be prepared to tell them of the salvation experiences of others and
the changes wrought in their lives. True stories are encouraging and are
prone to be remembered.
3. Always have salvation tracts and leaflets available to read with
them and, then, to give to them so that they can take them home and think
about it privately. Put your phone number on them so that they can call
you later.
4. Be prepared and familiar with pertinent scripture to share with them
from your Bible for each kind of objection or excuse that you are likely
to encounter while offering the Lord's salvation invitation.
While inviting the unsaved to ask for Jesus' baptism with the Holy
Ghost into His body of Christ, objections and excuses for "not
agreeing" often arise. These can be banished with friendly
conversation, good tracts, and your Bible.
This list of 21 "objections and excuses" that could arise are cited for
your occasional review and study. It's neither practical nor necessary to
memorize these; but you can keep this list in your Bible as a handy
reference. Do not try to use them in an argumentive manner or as a "logic
trap" when talking with someone about the eternal survival of his soul.
DON'T CONTEND. Don't brow beat the lost one. Instead, use Bible passages
for his assurance, understanding, and encouragement. Remember: Jesus is
the sinner's friend. Don't contend -- Be a friend.
1. I don't want to talk about
it.
(Possible help ~~ Isaiah 1:18 ~ Come now, and let
us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they
shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall
be as wool.)
2. I'm too great a sinner.
(Possible
help ~~ Mark 10:26-27 ~ And they were astonished out of measure,
saying among themselves, Who then can be saved? And Jesus looking upon
them saith, With men it is impossible, but not with God: for with God
all things are possible.
John 6:37 ~ All that the Father
giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise
cast out.)
3. I'm not good enough yet.
(Possible
help ~~ Luke 18:13-14 ~ And the publican, standing afar off,
would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his
breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. I tell you, this man
went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one
that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself
shall be exalted.
Ephesians 2:8-9 ~ For by grace are ye saved
through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of
works, lest any man should boast.)
4. I couldn't last as a
Christian.
(Possible help ~~ John 10:28-29 ~ And I give
unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any
man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater
than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand.)
5. I can't change my ways.
(Possible
help ~~ 2Corinthians 5:17 ~ Therefore if any man be in Christ, he
is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are
become new.
Philippians 4:13 ~ I can do all things through
Christ which strengtheneth me.)
6. I will lose my friends.
(Possible
help ~~ Hebrews 13:13-14 ~ Let us go forth therefore unto him
without the camp, bearing his reproach. For here have we no continuing
city, but we seek one to come.)
7. I have too much to lose.
(Possible
help ~~ Matthew 6:31-33 ~ Therefore take no thought, saying, What
shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be
clothed? (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your
heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek
ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things
shall be added unto you.
James 1:17 ~ Every good gift and
every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of
lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.)
8. God won't accept me.
(Possible help
~~ Isaiah 55:7 ~ Let the wicked forsake his way, and the
unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he
will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly
pardon.
Romans 5:8 ~ But God commendeth his love toward us, in
that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
Titus
3:4-7 ~ But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour
toward man appeared, Not by works of righteousness which we have done,
but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration,
and renewing of the Holy Ghost; Which he shed on us abundantly through
Jesus Christ our Saviour; That being justified by his grace, we should
be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.)
9. It's too late for me.
(Possible help
~~ Hebrews 7:25 ~ Wherefore he is able also to save them to the
uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make
intercession for them.
2Peter 3:9 ~ The Lord is not slack
concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is
longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that
all should come to repentance.)
10. I'm no worse than anybody
else.
(Possible help ~~ Proverbs 14:12 ~ There is a way
which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of
death.
Luke 16:15 ~ And he said unto them, Ye are they which
justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that
which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of
God.
Revelation 20:15 ~ And whosoever was not found written in
the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.)
11. I already belong to a
church.
(Possible help ~~ Matthew 11:28-30 ~ Come unto
me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in
heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and
my burden is light.
John 3:3 ~ Jesus answered and said unto
him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he
cannot see the kingdom of God.)
"Church"
has nothing to do with it. We must come to Jesus for His spiritual
baptism into everlasting life, and become a "member in particular" in
His church (the body of Christ).
12. I don't believe there is a
God.
(Possible help ~~ Psalm 14:1-3 ~ The fool hath
said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done
abominable works, there is none that doeth good. The LORD looked down
from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did
understand, and seek God. They are all gone aside, they are all together
become filthy: there is none that doeth good, no, not one.
Psalm
19:1-3 ~ Psalm 19 ~ The heavens declare the glory of God; and
the firmament sheweth his handywork. Day unto day uttereth speech, and
night unto night sheweth knowledge. There is no speech nor language,
where their voice is not heard. )
13. I'll wait until later.
(Possible
help ~~ Proverbs 27:1 ~ Boast not thyself of to morrow; for thou
knowest not what a day may bring forth.
Matthew 24:42-46 ~
Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come. But know
this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief
would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house
to be broken up. Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye
think not the Son of man cometh. Who then is a faithful and wise
servant, whom his lord hath made ruler over his household, to give them
meat in due season? Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he
cometh shall find so doing.
James 4:13-14 ~ Go to now, ye that
say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there
a year, and buy and sell, and get gain: Whereas ye know not what shall
be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that
appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.)
14. God is too good to condemn
anyone.
(Possible help ~~ Luke 13:1-5 ~ There were
present at that season some that told him of the Galilaeans, whose blood
Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. And Jesus answering said unto
them, Suppose ye that these Galilaeans were sinners above all the
Galilaeans, because they suffered such things? I tell you, Nay: but,
except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. Or those eighteen, upon
whom the tower in Siloam fell, and slew them, think ye that they were
sinners above all men that dwelt in Jerusalem? I tell you, Nay: but,
except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.
Revelation
20:9-15 ~ And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and
compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire
came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them. And the devil that
deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the
beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night
for ever and ever. And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on
it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was
found no place for them. And I saw the dead, small and great, stand
before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened,
which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things
which were written in the books, according to their works. And the sea
gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the
dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to
their works. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is
the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of
life was cast into the lake of fire.
Revelation 21:8 ~ But the
fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and
whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have
their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is
the second death.)
15. I'm trying to be a good Christian
already.
(Possible help ~~ John 3:3 ~ Jesus answered
and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born
again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
Ephesians 2:8-9 ~ For
by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is
the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.
Hebrews
11:6 ~ But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that
cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them
that diligently seek him.)
16. There are too many contradictions in the
Bible.
(Possible help ~~ 1Corinthians 2:9-16 ~ But as
it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered
into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that
love him. But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the
Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. For what man
knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him?
even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. Now we
have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of
God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.
Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom
teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things
with spiritual. But the natural man receiveth not the things of the
Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know
them, because they are spiritually discerned. But he that is spiritual
judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man. For who hath
known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? but we have the
mind of Christ.
2Peter 1:20-21 ~ Knowing this first, that no
prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the
prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God
spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.)
2Corinthians
3:5-6 ~ Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing
as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God; Who also hath made us
able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the
spirit: for THE LETTER KILLETH, BUT THE
SPIRIT GIVETH LIFE.
17. There are too many hypocrites in the
church.
(Possible help ~~ Matthew 7:15-17 ~ Beware of
false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they
are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather
grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so every good tree bringeth
forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil
fruit.
Romans 14:12-13 ~ So then every one of us shall give
account of himself to God. Let us not therefore judge one another any
more: but judge this rather, that no man put a stumblingblock or an
occasion to fall in his brother's way.)
It
is true. Don't deny it. Point out that there are also spiritually
regenerated born-again Christians in the worldly churches, and that they
are members of Jesus' spiritual church called "the body of Christ". Get
to know them. Or, better still, become one of them.
18. There is someone that I can't
forgive.
(Possible help ~~ Luke 17:3-4 ~ Take heed to
yourselves: If thy brother trespass against thee, rebuke him; and if he
repent, forgive him. And if he trespass against thee seven times in a
day, and seven times in a day turn again to thee, saying, I repent; thou
shalt forgive him.)
19. I'm a spiritualist.
(Possible help
~~ 1John 4:1-3 ~ Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the
spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone
out into the world. Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that
confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: And every
spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not
of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard
that it should come; and even now already is it in the
world.
Leviticus 20:6 ~ And the soul that turneth after such
as have familiar spirits, and after wizards, to go a whoring after them,
I will even set my face against that soul, and will cut him off from
among his people.)
20. I'm seeking God, but cannot find
him.
(Possible help ~~ Jeremiah 29:11-13 ~ For I know
the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace,
and not of evil, to give you an expected end. Then shall ye call upon
me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you. And
ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your
heart.
Hebrews 11:6 ~ But without faith it is impossible to
please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that
he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.)
21. I am too weak.
(Possible help ~~
2Corinthians 12:7-10 ~ And lest I should be exalted above measure
through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn
in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be
exalted above measure. For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that
it might depart from me. And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for
thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore
will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest
upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in
necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when
I am weak, then am I strong.
Isaiah 40:29-31 ~ He giveth power
to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength.
Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall
utterly fall: But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their
strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and
not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.
1John 5:4 ~
For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the
victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.)
This list also provides an excellent source for your personal Bible
study. Set aside some time to do nothing but go through these passages and
take note of the ones you think you would most likely use as references to
share with some lost soul. You might be surprised how much just doing this
will strengthen your own spiritual health. For as the passage in Hebrews
4:12 says, The word of God is alive and powerful .... And as Jesus
said in the John 6:63 passage, "It is the spirit that quickeneth; the
flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit
and they are life". Become a power Christian. Fill your heart
with the living spirit of the living Word of God.
If you have been leading a person to Christ, and he asks you to help
him be born again, you can help in this manner. When you are sure
(Be sure about this) that the person understands, and that he repents of
his sins with a godly sorrow, and that he truly desires to be
united with Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour; then ask him if he wants you
to pray for him to be saved. If he evidently (without doubt) agrees with
you, lay your hand upon his head and pray (with godly love and compassion
for him) for God to forgive him of his sins and for Jesus Christ to
baptize him with the Holy Spirit into the body of Christ. As a born again
Christian you have divine authority in the name of Jesus to do this. Your
only task is to desire, believe, ask, and trust. It is Jesus and the Holy
Spirit who perform the rebirth miracle (not the one who prays). Then be
patient. It could be minutes, hours, or days before the divine changes
begin to manifest in the reborn person's newness of life.
Also keep this in mind. We are all as transparent glass to Jesus Christ
(See Hebrews 4:12). He at all times knows the thoughts and intents of the
heart of each of us. Many have received rebirth in Christ because of their
own belief, desire, and trusting prayer, without the help of others.
Do not ask a person to repeat after you a so called "sinner's prayer".
This questionable practice has led to much harm and confusion. [Luke 18:13 -- And the publican, standing afar off, would not
lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast,
saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. ]
